A Christian is simply someone who has discovered how much God loves them and in response wants to live their life as a follower of Jesus, the one who came from God to show us God’s love and to teach us how to live. So becoming a Christian involves:
a change of mind – as we understand the truth about God
a change of heart – as we love God in return
and a change of life – as our new mind and heart cause us to live in new ways and according to different priorities
This process of changing mind, heart and life is often called “repentance”. Please note repentance is not apologising, although we may naturally be sorry for the way we lived our life before knowing God’s truth, but repentance is about a total change of direction in life towards God. The sign that we have embarked on this new life is called baptism, where in a short ceremony we are baptised (immersed) in water in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit – representing our death or burial of our old life and our birth or resurrection to a new life. A Christian also receives the Holy Spirit who gives us the power to lead the new life and helps guide us on the way.
